Nursery: Redux
It's funny, when you become pregnant with your first child, how your ideas of how something should work change so much over time. I definitely channeled all my hopes and dreams for my baby into the room that I decorated for her (with Daddy's help). I proudly showed pictures on her blog of all the progress, and each little detail.
So here we are, one year later and if you look at her room now, the changes are obvious. Some things worked well in theory, but not reality. The rocking chair had to go (she was rocked in it a few times when she was little, but the pointy edges in the small space just caused too many stubbed toes in the night). The hope chest was moved into the hallway and was replaced by a twin sized bed. Having that extra comfy surface to swaddle & nurse, read books, snuggle, and play "10 Little Monkeys", has really been worth it's weight in gold.
The filmy curtains went, in favor of blackout curtains. So much light in there made it difficult for her to nap, so we switched them out... what a dramatic difference! Our storage needs changed so much once she started having toys. At first it was just one little tote...but she's the youngest in a large family and she gets spoiled a little bit, so the collection has grown to include LOTS of books and plushy toys.
Here was the nursery before our baby was born:

And here it is now:

And so it goes. :)
P.S. Other things that changed: Lamp on changing table, BAD IDEA. Get a clip lamp for task lighting and movie it up high away from grabby little paws. Crazy floral bed linens, BAD IDEA. Sleep space is more successful (at least for us) in plain and soothing colors. Hanging bird cage. Totally adorable, and totally impractical. Aerial features are better when they are soft and don't squish your cat/and or child if they fall. This did not happen, BUT IT COULD HAVE. Also, you need an Diaper Genie (yes, I pooped out on cloth diapers and I feel awful about it, but I've moved on) AND an inflatable ducktub by Munchkin. And a wipe warmer. That is all.

gina | June 1, 2010, 12:00 pm | www.ginamstudio.com It\'s all still so cute!! The darling bird cage and the crazy floral linens will come back when she hits 7 or 8 and is ready to fix up her \"big girl\" room. :) -
Tara At The Sideshow | August 18, 2010, 10:38 pm | www.kindofasideshow.blogspot.com Hi Erin. A little birdy's been telling me good things about you lately. We never found out what we were having with our first baby, and I didn't want a theme for my nursery, so we went really eclectic. Four years later, with our second boy in a row (and sharing rooms, no less) the room got even more funky. But I find if you just embrace the quirky, multi-layered style, it looks so much more genuine. My point? I love your "after" pictures. (And I think we have some of the same toys... )
